Season of Service has launched in Arizona

October 6th, 2010 by Arizona CityFest

Arizona CityFest’s Season of Service,  the state-wide public service initiative promising catalytic change for the better throughout Arizona’s communities,  was officially kicked-off  Tuesday, October 5 with a ceremony of proclamations featuring Luis Palau, 8 Valley Mayors, State Senator Leah Landrum-Taylor, and Governor Jan Brewer. Over 400 partnering church pastors and ministry leaders were in attendance at the event. This was a truly historic occasion as it marks what will surely be the largest public service campaign in Arizona’s history, and certainly the first of its kind to integrate Arizona’s civic, business and church communities together as a whole, unified entity operating with the single, heartfelt purpose to serve.

A particular highpoint of the event occurred directly following the official proclamation given by Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman, in which Mayor Hallman delivered a visibly impassioned challenge in front of the audience to the other mayors on the event stage to not only volunteer for service projects themselves, but to carry them out in each-other’s communities rather than just their own, as a gesture of the true, selfless nature of service.

Mayor Hugh Hallman, being joined onstage by other civic officials and community leaders, proclaiming the start of the Season of Service for Tempe.

The event concluded with a prayer led by Luis Palau to see the Lord’s hand at work throughout Arizona communities. This sealing act of communion was a moment reflecting that prayer is the first course of action in effecting any positive change.

And now the fun begins…

Any Church or organization interested in carrying out service projects addressing Arizona needs in the areas of hunger, homelessness, education, neighborhood revitalization, family well-being and healthcare can register them  as Season of Service projects on the Arizona CityFest website.

Special Season of Service Impact Days have been set aside between October and March to emphasize one particular service area of focus at a time.

So many needs out there

July 23rd, 2010 by Arizona CityFest

So many needs out there. Each week I think I learn something new about people in our cities who are in need. Yesterday I sat and listened to two different groups of people who were organizing around two very concerning issues. The first was regarding human trafficking. This issue stems from so many problems, and this is not a problem that is elsewhere, but is very real and present in each and every of the communities here in Maricopa County. Quite frankly, it was a bit startling.

The second was with refugees who live in Phoenix from many other areas of the world: Asia, Africa, Latin America. The histories of these people are amazing, and the fact that they are forging out new communities here in Phoenix is brave. The culture differences are great, and for many of them community is hard to come by. Most of their time is spent working and providing for friends and family who were not as fortunate to have received the work visas to immigrate to the US. But they are here; they are us. These two issues are only a microcosm of the many valid, genuine, important issues facing our state; from hunger and homelessness, to family well-being issues and the needs in our education system.

There are two ways that people might approach these issues. The first is to be overwhelmed, to feel that the needs are too big, and they shy away, gloss over, or refuse to engage any one issue as they feel that they just cannot make an impact. I know that this temptation is even there for me at times. But the other response, which all of the passionate individuals I encountered yesterday chose, was to engage the issues head on. Whether it was close to their hearts, pricked their sense of justice, or simply seemed like the right thing to do, they expanded outside of themselves to forge a better community. This idealized approach to community could very well be a reality, if only more would join together. One by one, individuals, churches, businesses, and government slowly stem the tide of the evils and injustices that are around us, and we can come together. Alone, issues are too large for any one organization to take them all on. But united, together, the network forms which allows us to address them all, each addressing those closest to their passions. The first step is simply to step outside of ourselves, to see the need and help another. There are so many problems, but so many ways to address these problems. I choose, and I know a multitude of others, who choose to help forge a better society.

Ultimately, this is what Arizona CityFest and the Season of Service is about, recognizing the needs and the valiant efforts of many who are addressing these issues. Just as Solomon wrote a long time ago, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12. Do we give up, avoid, ignore the issues and needs of our day? Do we deny our community in action? Or do we stand together, work together, and allow these myriad needs to be addressed and Arizona to become the state and community it has the full potential to be?

What a concept!

June 24th, 2010 by Arizona CityFest

It’s amazing how the word about Arizona Cityfest is getting out all around town!!  Do you know???  If you don’t know you better ask someone.  Better yet ask us!

This week has been a whirlwind of activity surrounding the Season of Service and the overall festival.  Valley churches, civic leaders and businesses all working together to impact the surrounding community – What a concept!  I’m honored to play a small part in the organization of this historic partnership.

I know that these blog entries touch on a lot of subjects and activities, however I want to also comment on the people working together to make this happen.  The whole team is AMAZING!!  These people are completely dedicated, talented, and just cool folks.  I feel so blessed to call them co-workers and friends.  Keep coming back to the blog to hear about all the wonderful projects that are coming up this Fall.  Or just tell us how great we are doing ; ).

Now that’s value added.

June 17th, 2010 by Arizona CityFest

It has been really exciting over the last few weeks engaging with the Arizona Cityfest. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of people who are excited to partner with others to help and bless people in their communities and around the Valley. It seems we are in a special time where we know we need each other to do what needs to be done, and our communities need all of us to step up and get it done.

Into this ideal atmosphere comes the Arizona Cityfest with its Season of Service. Suddenly we get to be the catalyst everyone is waiting for. What a privilege! And we are all interested in the same things: its not about an event next March – though we’ll take full advantage of it and it will be great – but – Its all about forming lasting partnerships across all barriers that will make a profound difference in our community for many years to come.

Now that’s value added.

Executive meeting!  Wow!  What a turn out!  Who would have thought that on a June morning in Arizona, so many people would show up!  Praise God for the commitment of the business leaders, church leaders and community leaders of this city!  How exciting it will be to see what transpires in our communities through Arizona CityFest.  So much can be accomplished with so many talented individuals involved.  I am proud to say that I have a small part in this adventure!

Serve – Share – Sustain

June 16th, 2010 by Arizona CityFest

Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking to a great existing coalition in the town of Buckeye. An initiative of the Buckeye Police Department, the Buckeye Faith Builders is a partnership in which the BPD asks churches how they could “Serve the Serving” of the community. I was honored to be able to discuss and tell the city leaders and faith community representatives about Arizona CityFest and the Season of Service. The attendees included Buckeye’s Mayor, City Manager, and Police Chief, as well as influential leaders from a dozen Buckeye faith communities.

Plugging into these existing coalitions is a primary part of the creation of sustainability in the CityFest vision. What was amazing was the reception of the group – they love the vision and see CityFest as a tremendous catalyst for the programs and support they have in Buckeye. The ability to network and connect the faith communities with civic and business leaders was tremendous. Not only did a few churches step up to state their interest in involvement, Faith Builders did as well! This coalition sees the vision of impacting Buckeye, and all of Arizona and is taking the initiative to get the word out to their community.  They wanted us to present the vision to their Chamber of Commerce, and stated in their Faith Builders “meeting agenda notes” that they would keep a standing update on what groups were doing in support of the Season of Service! It was a tremendous response, one that shows how the simple ideas of Serve – Share – Sustain really do indicate the possibility, no –  the probability, that we can meet and impact the needs of Arizona!

Arizona CityFest Serving the Valley Homeless

June 2nd, 2010 by Arizona CityFest

Recently, Billy Thrall and members of our Season of Service (SOS) committee gathered with the Campus Leadership League (CLL), a collaborate effort of 5 homeless initiatives led by actual members of the homeless population to address matters of shelter, safety and self-empowerment.

One of the ways Arizona CityFest and the Season of Service is seeking to advance these initiatives is by serving as a bridge to better connect existing homeless programs in our state. For instance, there are great and urgent needs in the homeless population that can not be met by the city’s largest homeless shelter, Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), due to financial constraints to provide their 5,000 annual clients with a minimum amount of medical attention, adequate sanitation and safety from the harsh summertime conditions which the city’s homeless are exposed to. The relationships being formed from Arizona CityFest will get mobile medical services to this segment of our population. The Season of Service volunteer mobilization effort will provide the labor to address the unbearable conditions of CASS’s overflow shelter (MOS) which houses between 500 – 700 people nightly, half of whom are relegated to sleeping in the outside parking lot, not being fortunate enough to claim a spot in the bug-infested MOS interior, which was never built to house people in the first place.

What we are talking about is basic human needs being met by and through the spirit of service. Why? Because to serve is GOOD! It’s as simple as that. There truly is no agenda with the Season of Service other than the agenda of serving those who need help in serving themselves. The solutions to a great many of our city’s problems are already there, they’re just waiting for someone to come along and implement them. That’s what SOS aims to do.

This fenced-in parking lot at MOS is the last refuge for those not fortunate enough to claim a spot inside the building. The two portable bathrooms pictured are the only such facilities available for as many as 700 people a night.

From Seeing Needs to Meeting Needs

May 24th, 2010 by Arizona CityFest

Few would argue that there are not many needs in Arizona these days. Hunger and homelessness are issues. Cutbacks in government budgets are creating slashes in many educational programs. Unemployment is high, with jobs scarce. Foreclosures are a very real threat to almost everyone if a loss of job occurs. We all know that there are needs, and these needs are pretty close to home.

Yet this morning I sat in a meeting with several human service organizations, from federally-funded government programs, state and local government programs, established and young indepentent non-profit and faith-based organizations. In effect, the entire spectrum of groups trying to meet the needs of our communities.

I was struck by something rather startling. There are actually openings in some of these programs right now! And it was not just government programs, but across the board. It made me realize that perhaps one of the bigger needs is simply connecting the people in need with the programs trying to meet the need. I saw that this is where Arizona CityFest comes into the picture.

On the one side, we have people in need. On the other, there are providers who are desperately looking for people to help. In the middle can be the Season of Service, collaborating and empowering those in the community to help fill these needs. Arizona CityFest is a catalyst which can bind this separation, uniting those in need with those who help. The needs are visible, as are much of the aid and service. Let’s connect the two, bringing together those who would serve and those already serving with those who need some service.
